Buying Guide for Medium Format Film Cameras
Choosing the right medium format film camera involves several important factors to consider, ensuring the best fit for your photography style and needs.
Film Format and Compatibility
Medium format film generally refers to 120 and 220 roll films that produce larger negatives than 35mm film, resulting in higher detail and image quality. Confirm the camera’s compatible film type; many Holga models use 120 film, while others, like the Pentax 17, use 35mm in a half-frame format to increase exposure count per roll.
Lens Quality and Focusing System
The lens material significantly impacts image sharpness and contrast. Plastic lenses common in Holga cameras create soft focus and vignetting, favored for artistic effects. Glass lenses, as seen in some Holga 120GCFN models, offer improved sharpness while retaining unique visual attributes. Also, evaluate the focusing system, such as zone focusing or adjustable focus zones, to match how much control you want over sharpness.
Camera Build and Portability
Medium format cameras can range from lightweight plastic bodies to solid metal constructions. Look for compact, durable materials if you plan to carry your camera extensively. Models like the Pentax 17 feature lightweight magnesium alloy making them more robust and portable than some toy cameras.
Additional Features
Flash options, shutter speeds, and additional accessories matter. Cameras like the Holga 120GCFN with built-in flash and color filters add creative possibilities, while others offer simple shutter speeds. Also, some bundles include microfiber cloths and multiple film packages, bringing value by helping you start shooting immediately.
Cost and Value Bundles
Many medium format film cameras come bundled with film rolls, which can vary in type and quality. Bundles including popular films like Ilford HP5 Plus or Kodak TX can provide better starting value, especially for newcomers. Instant cameras like the Polaroid Go offer a different shooting experience with instant prints but differ from traditional medium format film quality.
